The video on Luoyang
documents our visit to the Buddhist Longmen 龍門 Grottoes in Luoyang together with Prof. em. Dr. Luo Zhao 罗炤. Prof. Luo Zhao, who is well-known for his Buddho-archaeological work and who has been connected with the Department of Sinology in Erlangen for a long time, had overseen the research activities in one of these grottoes and guided us through the caves. The intense examination right on the ground produced insights into the ongoing discussion about the so-called “sinicization” of Buddhism and about religious migrations, as well. Forms of inner archaicization that must have remained conscious to the observer were fascinating as sculptured figures of Indian design wore, for instance, Chinese clothing dating to the Han dynasty.
