Curriculum Vitae

Dr David Sehnal was born on 30th of September 1964 in Kroměříž, Czechoslovakia. In 1988, he graduated in Sinology at the Department of Oriental Studies, Leningrad State University. From 1990-1994, he studied the history of Chinese Language as M.A. programme at Beijing University, the theme of his thesis being "Predicative Verbs in the Book of Mengzi". From 1994 to 2011, he was employed at the Institute of East Asian Studies, Charles University in Prague. From 2008-2011, holding the position of the head of Sinology and Vietnamese Studies, he taught a wide range of subjects, mainly the Grammar of Modern and Classical Chinese, Theoretical Grammar of Chinese, History of the Chinese Language, History of Chinese Philosophy, Structure of Non-flective Languages, etc. Since 2003, he has cooperated with the University of Vienna, teaching Classical Chinese on annual intensive courses. From 2010-2011, he was based at Beijing University as a visiting Professor. Since 2011, he has been living in Beijing. In 2009, he enrolled as a Ph.D. student at Charles University and, in February 2012, he successfully defended his thesis: "Book of Laozi. A Translation with Philological Notes".
