Curriculum Vitae

Carlos Estepa Díez was born in 1949 and studied at the University of Madrid (Complutense): Graduate (1971), PhD (1976). He has taught at several Spanish universities (1973-1982) and was Professor of Medieval History at the University of León (1982-1990). Since 1990, he has been Research Professor at the CSIC, Instituto de Historia (Madrid), where he currently directs the Research Program on the Social History of Power. His work covers a wide range of subjects, from urban to political and institutional history, especially the making and evolution of Castilian feudalism. In recent years, he has played a leading role in the renewed study of the behetría lordship as considered in a wider social and political context. He has been principal researcher on multiple Projects and recently has been working on royal power and the Castilian monarchy in the 12-13th centuries. His publications include: ′Estructura social de la ciudad de León (Siglos XI-XIII)′ (1977); ′Formación y consolidación del feudalismo en Castilla y León (1990), Los señoríos de behetría′, edited with C. Jular (2001, English translation); ′Land, Power and Society in Medieval Castile: A Study of Behetría Lordship′ (2009); Las behetrías castellanas (2003); and ′Poder real y sociedad: estudios sobre el reinado de Alfonso VIII′ (1158-1214) with I. Alvarez Borge y J. Mª Santamarta (2011).
