Study Session on "Destiny and Divination in Early 4th-Century China"
February 26, 2016
Ge Hong's Baopu zi neipian (Inner Chapters of the Master Who Embraces Spontaneous Nature) is a major source of early 4th-century Taoist and popular religion in China. This Study Session focuses on materials on destiny and divination contained in this work.
The event is tied to a project that aims to produce complete and annotated translations of the Baopu zi neipian into English (edited by Fabrizio Pregadio) and French (edited by Catherine Despeux), which take into account the development of Taoist studies in the past decades.
Several members of the translation team will participate in the event. In addition, PhD students and IKGF Visiting Fellows will contribute short presentations on related subjects. Presentations will not be formal lectures and will have different formats, as chosen by the speakers. Their purpose is to stimulate conversation, debate, and suggestions for the translation project.
