Manfred Kubny / Michael Lackner: Critical Edition and Translation of Selected Biographies Found in the "Registers about Fate" (Ming Pu 命譜), Written by Yuan Shushan 袁樹珊 (1881-1952(?))

Yuan Shushan 袁樹珊 (1881-1952 ?) is also the author of the Ming Pu 命譜 (Registers about Fate), in which the biographies of famous persons from Chinese History are interpreted according to the technique of Bazi Suanming. Lackner and Kubny collaborate on the critical edition and translation of selected biographies found in this book. The Mingpu contains altogether 64 biographies of eminent Chinese philosophers, emperors, officials, scholars or generals, beginning from pre-Han time up to the 20th century, like Konfuzius, Zhu Xi, Wang Yangming and others. At the center of these "horoscope biographies" stands an explanation of biographical details based on theories of Bazi Suanming and its technical terminologies. Each biography contains a different theoretical access to Bazi Suanming. Each biography is divided into different subchapters: After a summary of the official biography of the person, an analysis in Bazi Suanming terms follows, wherein Yuan Shushan displays the technical instruments of Bazi Suanming and tries to outline the system as a whole. Finally, selected passages of works of all protagonists are enclosed, which are meant to give evidence for the person's support of mantic practices.
